Open-source video recording for IP cameras

LarisVMS records video, audio, and events from IP cameras to local disks or network shares on one or more Windows recorder nodes. Live view, playback, and administration all run in the browser.

Free and open source under the Apache License 2.0.

What it does

Record without re-encoding

Run as many Windows recorder nodes as you need. Recording is ffmpeg -c copy, in continuous, motion, schedule, or event mode, with pre/post-roll, retention, quotas, and archive volumes. Nodes keep recording even if the server goes down.

Add cameras in minutes

Built for any IP camera with an RTSP stream. ONVIF cameras are found on your network and set up automatically, and adding plain RTSP cameras is coming soon. H.264 and HEVC, with audio. Multi-lens cameras supported.

Built-in AI detection

YOLOX, D-FINE, or your own ONNX model on NVIDIA, AMD, Intel, or CPU. Live bounding boxes, object badges, and a cropped snapshot for every detected object.

Everything in the browser

Camera walls, synchronized multi-camera playback on a zoomable timeline, exports, and bookmarks. Works on desktop, tablet, and phone, and installs as an app on Android and iOS. No client software to install.

How it fits together

A LarisVMS install has one web server and any number of recorder nodes. Settings are inherited global → node → camera, and the most specific value wins.

ComponentRuns asRole
LarisVMS Web Windows service (Kestrel, HTTPS) Web UI, REST API, and node control plane. Stores configuration in SQL Server.
LarisVMS Node Windows service, one per recording machine Ingests RTSP, writes segments, enforces retention, runs motion detection, and serves live and playback video.
LarisVMS Vision Service Child process of a node (optional) GPU/CPU object detection. It's isolated, so a driver fault never stops recording.
LarisVMS Proxy Windows service (optional) Relays video between browsers and nodes, for remote sites or low-bandwidth links.
