About LarisVMS
LarisVMS is open-source video management software (VMS/NVR) for IP cameras, built for Windows and run from the browser.
It started as a home project and has been running on real cameras for months. It's tailored to that setup today, but the goal is to work with as much camera and server hardware as possible. It's been tested with Amcrest/Dahua cameras. Any ONVIF-compatible camera can be added today, and support for any camera with an RTSP stream is on the way. Brand-specific integrations that take advantage of extra camera features are planned.
Where the name comes from
The name is a deliberate respelling of the Lares, the guardian spirits of ancient Rome. Every Roman household kept a small shrine, the lararium, to its Lares, who were believed to watch over the home, the family, and everything inside its boundaries. Other Lares guarded crossroads, neighborhoods, roads, and the city itself.
A security camera system does the same job: quietly watching over a home or a property, day and night. (Fittingly, Laris is also the Latin for "of the Lar", the singular of Lares.)
A note on AI-assisted development
LarisVMS is built with the help of AI tooling (Claude Code). Features are planned in detail before implementation, generated code is reviewed as it's written, and changes are tested as they land. If you notice something odd, please open an issue.
